To be completely real, the top of 2025 has been fucking weird. While I’m thankful to be back home, it’s been extremely heavy living in LA right now in the midst of the wildfires. The energy been eerie, folks been mourning the loss of their family homes and businesses. Though my blood family did not lose their homes and are safe, I have many other loved ones who have had generational homes, schools, libraries, nature spots completely wiped off the map. While I’m grateful to have survived and still have a roof over my head, this shit is weird bruh. And honestly, at the end of the day, whether we like it or not if you’ve been in Los Angeles at any point since January 7th, you are affected by these fires. The air quality, our emotional capacity, and general bandwidth (amongst other tings) have shifted immensely due to the aftermath of the wildfires. The most frustrating part is that this was all preventable. Yet another example of why landback, why indigenous stewardship are the necessary way forward. The Earth is hollering at us, it’s beyond time we listen. Sooooo…yeah. It’s a difficult time in the LAnd right now, and still the people been showing up. Folks are volunteering, donating their time and resources, offering their skills to support folks impacted. It’s been beautiful to witness, in the midst of all the sobering energy.
It feels strange to returning back to performances, really work in general, when shit is reallllllyyyy hitting the fan right now. It didn’t sit right with me when the gardeners in my neighborhood returned to work the day after the fires broke out, and it still don’t sit right 20 days later. There hasn’t really been much time to process these fires and the aftermath. The way the capitalism monster is set up we’re not meant to have any free moments to reflect and unpack on what we’re experiencing. We’re not “supposed” to spend time resting, reseting. We’re “supposed” to be productive, to be useful to the system.
And I’m gonna be real, despite everything it feels really good knowing that niggas are becoming more focused on how we can be useful to each other than any system. Whether it be the creation various donation and volunteer sites across the city of Los Angeles, or in the way a friend gifted me KF94 masks and I immediately gave a few to the gardeners I mentioned earlier — we gotta answer the call. We all we got, and I give thanks to that. I’m calling in that this energy and intentionality keeps on going.
On the note of being useful to each other, this Friday 1/31 I’m playing Zap Sessions at Hotel Ziggy. This is my first show of 2025, and I’m looking forward to enjoying music together in-person again. FREE show, and I’m bringing a badass band with me. I look forward to hugging and seeing you there. Click to RSVP.
Before I go, I wanted to share some resources to aid folks who may need assistance right now. Please pass along to your people.
